Russia threatens retaliation as US plans to back out of nuclear deal
Authorities in Russia have threatened retaliation after the United States of America stated that it is considering pulling out of a nuclear weapons treaty with Russia over claims Moscow violated deal.
“Russia has not, unfortunately, honoured the agreement so we’re going to terminate the agreement and we’re going to pull out,” US President Donald Trump told reporters on Saturday after a rally in Nevada.
Reacting to the comments of the US leader, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Sunday that a unilateral withdrawal by the United States would be “very dangerous” and lead to a “military-technical” retaliation.
Reports say the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty was signed in 1987 by then-US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet General-Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev in Washington.
It banned nuclear and conventional missiles with ranges of 500 to 1,000km, as well as their launchers.
