Leave the church out of your politics, pro-Buhari group tells Kukah

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah has been warned to refrain from dragging the church into politics.

This warning was given by the Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) in a statement signed by its chairman, Niyi Akinsiju and the Secretary Cassidy Madueke in Abuja.

The clergy man who is a member of the National Peace Committee has been under criticism following his trip to Ogun state to visit former President Olusegun Obasanjo where the latter endorsed the presidential aspirant of the People Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

The organisation insisted that the Bishop should leave the Catholic Church out of his moves to reconcile the two parties.

“Of course, the Bishop has a duty to facilitate peace between two of his politician friends but we plead with him to leave the Catholic Church out of his defence,” it stated.

The group describes the church as a “respected, non-partisan spiritual institution…held in high esteem and would not do anything to denigrate it.”

It further explained why it was difficult not to tag the move as political, saying “It was clear from the outset that the meeting was political and there was no way it could have been viewed differently at a time like this.”

The group advised religious leaders to take to heart the admonition of President Muhammadu Buhari not to involve themselves in politics
