DRC’s Ebola outbreak may worsen, WHO warns

The World Health Organisation (WHO) following an emergency committee meeting of experts convened by the body said on Wednesday that the Ebola outbreak in the DRC may worsen unless the response to its spread is stepped-up.

However, it does not yet constitute a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), the emergency committee said.

“The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, WHO, and partners must intensify the current response. Without this, the situation is likely to deteriorate significantly,” the committee said in a statement.

The warning is coming after WHO had earlier warned of an impending Ebola “perfect storm” in the wake of attacks by armed groups, community resistance and the geographic spread of the disease in the DRC.

The deadly attack which occurred in the restive east claimed 21 lives with the Congolese army blaming the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a notorious rebel militia for the assault.

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said it, and other aid agencies, have been forced to temporarily suspend activities in Beni because of the attack.
