Court jails man for importing 1,570 pump-action guns

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the jailing of one Ayogu James for allegedly importing 1,570 pump action guns from Istanbul, Turkey.

The suspect was arrested by men of the Nigerian Customs Service after he shipped the firearms into the country through the Apapa Seaport, Lagos, using two 20-foot containers.

Reports say the suspect also forged a Form M and a Pre-Arrival Assessment Report to disguise the true content of the containers in order to conceal the true country of origin where the guns were being imported from.

James was arraigned on 11 counts on Tuesday before Justice Saliu Saidu alongside his company, Great James Oil and Gas Limited, of 1, Warehouse Road, Apapa, Lagos.

According to the prosecuting counsel for the customs, Julius Ajakaiye, James committed the offence in September 2017 in connivance with Ifeuwa Moses, who had earlier been arraigned; and other persons still at large.

Ajakaiye, said the defendants acted contrary to sections 3(6), 1(14)(a), 1(14)(a)(i), 1(2)(c) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act Cap. M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

After listening to the prosecutor and the defendant, Justice Saidu adjourned the case till November 20 and 21, 2018, for further hearing and also ordered the detention of the suspect.
