NBS: Commuters paid more for transport fare despite drop in petrol price in August
In spite of the drop in the average pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, otherwise known as petrol, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, and nineteen (19) other states, there was no corresponding reduction in the amount commuters paid to journey within the cities in August.
According to the latest data obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the average pump price of PMS dropped by 0.3 percent to N144.60 per litre in Abuja, but the average price of travelling within the city by bus rose by 19.4 percent to N400 per drop in the review month.
The development was also the same across nineteen other states including Akwa-Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Lagos, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers, Taraba and Yobe state.
The states recorded reduction in the average pump price of PMS but increased transport fare of journey by bus within the cities from N200, N92, N90, N155, N210, N220, N140, N140, N160, N135, N220, N120, N150, N145, N150, N159, N110, N160 and N148 per drop in July, respectively.
Also, the data showed that all the states of the federation recorded increase in the transport fare for bus journey within the city and intercity bus journey using state routes.
However, only Kwara state recorded a price drop of 26.8 percent in the transport fare for intercity bus journeys using state routes from N2050 to N1500 per drop.
