APC aspirants in Ogun team up against Gov Amosun’s
The governorship primary election of the Ogun State chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) promises to be interesting, as five of the aspirants have teamed up to work against what they term a “common enemy”.
The common enemy, according to the aspirants, is the anointed candidate of Governor Ibikunle Amosun, Hon Adekunle Akinlade.
Akinlade, who is the member representing Egbado South/Ipokia Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, was announced by leaders and elders of the party on September 6 as the consensus candidate of the APC for the 2019 governorship election in the state.
His announcement was however denounced by other aspirants, who claimed the move was unconstitutional and that they were not carried along. They insisted on contesting for the party’s primary.
The five aspirants, who have agreed to work together are the Special Adviser to Kaduna State Governor, Jimi Lawal, former Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Bimbo Ashiru, an oil magnate, Dapo Abiodun, former Senator who represented Ogun East, Gbenga Kaka and former Commissioner in the state Civil Service Commission, Abayomi Hunye.
Hunye, who dropped the hint while speaking with journalists in Abeokuta on Monday, said the five aspirants have agreed to fight a “common enemy.”
Hunye, who also rejected the APC’s adoption of indirect primaries as mode of electing the party’s candidates, insisted that the aspirants stand on the direct primaries earlier adopted by the party.
“We believe we have one common enemy who is the consensus candidate from Governor Amosun. Since, we’ve all agreed he is a common enemy, we want to work together.
“The aspirants are, Jimi Lawal, Dapo Abiodun, Senator Gbenga Kaka, Bimbo Ashiru and myself, Abayomi Hunye,” he said.
The aspirant however failed to disclose if the five had agreed to present a consensus candidate for the primary election.
