Coffee powered buses now operational in London

For the first time starting today, waste coffee grounds will be used to help power some of Londonā€˜s buses.

That much was revealed after technology firm bio-bean says it has produced enough coffee oil to power one bus for a year using a biofuel created by blending oil extracted from coffee waste mixed with diesel.

ā€œItā€™s a great example of what can be done when we start to re-imagine waste as an untapped resource,ā€ bio-bean founder Arthur Kay said.

The company believes it will take up to 2.55 million cups of coffee to create enough biofuel to run a London bus for a year once the oil has been blended with diesel.

It is the first time a coffee-derived biofuel will be used on Londonā€™s public transport system with Transport for London (TfL) has increasingly turned to using biofuels to reduce transport emissions.
