Khashoggi’s murder premeditated, Saudi Arabia says
Days after declaring through an official statement that the murder of pen-pusher Jamal Khashoggi was unintended, Saudi Arabia’s public prosecutor said on Thursday the assassination of the journalist was premeditated.
Saudi state TV quoted the Saudi public prosecutor as saying the killing was premeditated, and that prosecutors were interrogating suspects on the basis of information provided by a joint Saudi-Turkish task force.
“Information from the Turkish side affirms that the suspects in Khashoggi’s case premeditated their crime,” said the statement carried by state TV.
The statement is coming after CIA Director Gina Haspel claimed she heard compelling audio recordings of the victim’s assassination.
According to the Washington Post, Haspel is flying back to Washington, DC, from Turkey after reportedly listening to the audio recording of Khashoggi’s murder.
Quoting people familiar with her meetings with Turkish officials, the newspaper said Haspel heard the “compelling” recordings after departing on a secret trip to Turkey on Monday. Turkish media reports also said the CIA boss heard the grisly recording.
If confirmed, the recording gives a key American official access to the evidence used by Turkey to accuse Saudi Arabia of premeditated murder.
