189 passengers feared dead as Boeing 737 flight crashes after takeoff

Tragedy struck in Indonesia when a Boeing 737 with 189 people on board crashed into the Java Sea shortly after takeoff.

Rescue operatives say they fear that there might be no survivors in the crash involving the Lion Air passenger flight heading from Jakarta to the island of Sumatra before it crashed.

According to Yohanes Sirait, a spokesman for the country’s air navigation authorities, the pilots requested to return to base shortly before losing contact.

“The [traffic] control allowed that, but then, it lost contact,” Sirait said.

Wreckage was found near where the aircraft lost contact, said Muhammad Syaugi, head of the search-and-rescue agency.

“We don’t know yet whether there are any survivors,” Syaugi told a news conference. “We hope, we pray, but we cannot confirm.”
